Toyohira River

Japanese:
Toyohira River

A tributary of the Ishikari River that flows through Sapporo City in central-west Hokkaido. It is 76 km long. It originates from Koizariyama in the Shiribeshi volcanic group, passes through Jozankei, creates an alluvial fan on which the Sapporo city area sits, and joins the Ishikari River at Kakuyama in Ebetsu City. The deep Hoheikyo Gorge was created upstream, but most of it has become an artificial lake created by the Hoheikyo Dam, and flows down forming two or three terraces below, some of which reach Hiragishi in Sapporo city. The dam's reservoir is used for power generation and water supply for the city's residents. Two Japanese who worked as ferrymen on the Toyohira River near the current Toyohira Bridge during the Ansei period (1854-1860) are said to have been the first residents of Sapporo, and since the pioneering days, industries such as beer and flax have been developed using this water. Apples and hops were cultivated on the alluvial fans and terraces, but they have now been completely developed into residential areas. Jugoshima, Monan, and Nakajima parks are located along the river and serve as places of relaxation for the local residents.

Hoheikyo Dam
This multipurpose dam was completed in 1972. It was created by damming up part of the Toyohira Gorge upstream of the Toyohira River. The area around the reservoir (Lake Jozan) is known as a famous spot for viewing autumn leaves. Sapporo, Hokkaido © Sapporo City Tourism and Culture Bureau ">
