A region in central Italy facing the Adriatic Sea. It has an area of 9,694 km2 and a population of 1.44 million (1994). It is made up of four provinces: Pesaro and Urbino, Ancona, Macerata, and Ascoli Piceno. It is a mountainous region, with flat land limited to rivers and the coast. Its capital is Ancona. In recent years, industry (shoemaking, textiles, clothing, furniture, papermaking, shipbuilding) has developed significantly, with 43% of the working population employed in this industry. Agriculture and the service industry are also thriving. The name "Marche" comes from the 10th century Carolingian "Marca" (meaning "frontier territory" and including Ancona, Fermo, Camerino, etc.), but it was not officially used until 1815.
