It is a membrane-like structure of tough proteins that covers the keratinocytes that make up the outermost layer of the skin, and is also called the "keratinized outer membrane." Corneal cells have various mechanisms to maintain their normal functions (moisturizing and barrier function), which are skillfully controlled and constantly regenerated to maintain overall homeostasis, but CEs in particular play an important role in the barrier function of the skin. The process of CE formation begins with the differentiation of epidermal keratinocytes, and is produced by the action of the enzyme transglutaminase. When CEs migrate to the stratum corneum and differentiate into keratinocytes, they appear on the outermost surface of the cells. When CEs mature sufficiently within the stratum corneum, they become a membrane with an extremely tough structure, and when intercellular lipids are properly arranged on the basis of the mature CEs, a stratum corneum with good barrier function is formed.

皮膚の最外層を構成する角層細胞を覆う頑丈なたんぱく質の膜状構造のことで、「角化外膜」ともいう。角層細胞は、その働き(保湿・バリア機能)を正常に保つためさまざまな仕組みを持ち、それらは巧みにコントロールされ、常に生まれ変わりながら全体の恒常性を維持しているが、CEは特に皮膚のバリア機能に重要な役割を果たしている。CEが形成される過程は、表皮角化細胞の分化とともに、酵素トランスグルタミナーゼの働きによって作られ始め、角層に移行して角層細胞に分化する際、細胞の最も外側に現れる。その際、角層の中で十分に成熟することで、極めて丈夫な構造の膜となり、成熟したCEを土台として細胞間脂質がきちんと配列することで、バリア機能の良好な角層が形成される。
