French poet. Born in Venice, Italy. A member of the Pleiade school. He studied under the Greek scholar Jean Dorat (1508-88) at the École Coclés in Paris with Ronsard and Du Bellay, and formed the Brigade, the predecessor of the Pleiade school. He experimented with various genres of poetry, including Petrarchan-style love poems, and also wrote plays. Under the patronage of Charles IX, he founded the Academie des Poets et des Musices in 1570, aiming to fuse music and poetry. He also experimented with various things, such as ancient metrical verse (by alternating long and short syllables) and spelling reform. Although he was mediocre as a poet, he was knowledgeable and imaginative. His works include Les Amours de Méline (1552), Quatre livres de l'Amour de Francine (1555), Collected Poems (1573), The Gifts of Poetry (1574), the aphoristic poem Mimes, Enseignements et Proverbes (1576), and the play Le Brave (1567).
