Bordet (English spelling) Jules Jean Baptiste Vincent Bordet

Bordet (English spelling) Jules Jean Baptiste Vincent Bordet

Belgian bacteriologist. Graduated from the University of Brussels. In 1894 he entered the Institut Pasteur in Paris, where he studied under Metchnikoff. He served as director of the Institut Pasteur in Brussels (1901) and professor at the University of Brussels (1907). He discovered the immunological hemolysis phenomenon, in which the serum of a guinea pig injected with rabbit blood lyses the rabbit's red blood cells, and proved that this occurs through the cooperation of two substances, the immune system in the guinea pig serum and a normal serum component (complement), and later devised the complement fixation reaction. In 1906 he discovered the pertussis bacterium in collaboration with Octave Gengou (1875-1957), and continued to research bacteriophages until his later years. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1919 for his "discoveries concerning immunity."
