In the lower Athabasca River basin, there is a geological layer known as an oil sand (tar sand) deposit. It is a layer of sand (average thickness of 50 meters) containing dark brown, viscous, heavy hydrocarbon oil (bitumen), and it exists at a depth of 0 to 300 meters and an area of 25,000 km2. There are various technical difficulties in processing it, and it has not been fully developed, but some companies have mined the sand by open-cut mining, heated it in hot water to extract the bitumen, and processed it in the same way as petroleum.

Bitumen is a black or dark brown substance that is solid or semi-solid at room temperature and is composed mainly of condensed polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. It is also called bitumen. It is found both naturally and from petroleum.
