Cunha, Euclides Rodrigues Pimenta da
Born January 20, 1866 in Santa Rita do Rio Negro, Rio de Janeiro.
[Died] August 15, 1909, Rio de Janeiro. Brazilian novelist and journalist. Orphaned at the age of three, he was raised by his aunt. He entered the engineering department of a university, but soon transferred to the military academy. However, he was expelled in 1888 as a rebel, and later returned to study engineering. With the Republican Revolution, he rejoined the army, and was discharged in 1896. He then worked as a civil engineer and journalist. He went to Canudos in the northeast as a correspondent for the São Paulo newspaper, Estado de São Paulo. Based on his reportage, he wrote his masterpiece Os Sertões (1902), which can be seen as a poem about humans fighting the earth, and became a monumental work in Brazilian literature. He was shot dead in a fight.

[Died] 1787. Portuguese poet and mathematician from Lisbon. He was an artillery officer, but was appointed professor of geometry at the University of Coimbra by the Marquis of Pombal due to his wide knowledge of science and literature. However, he was put on trial by the Inquisition in 1778 for his poem "The Voice of Reason" (A Voz da Razão), which criticized the church. Cunha was the most daring poet of the century, and his poems contain cries of rebellion and a strong desire for freedom. His collected works were published in 1839.

ブラジルの小説家,ジャーナリスト。3歳で孤児となり伯母のもとで育てられた。大学の工学部に入るが,すぐ陸軍士官学校に転校。しかし,1888年反抗分子として退学させられ,のち再び工学部で学ぶ。共和革命とともに再び軍隊に入り,96年除隊。以後,土木技師,ジャーナリストとして活躍。サンパウロ市の新聞『エスタード・デ・サンパウロ』の特派員として北東部のカヌードスにおもむく。このときのルポをもとにして大地と戦う人間の詩ともいえる大作『奥地の人々』 Os Sertões (1902) を書き,ブラジル文学に一大金字塔を打立てた。けんかがもとで射殺された。

ポルトガルの詩人,数学者。砲術の士官であったが,その科学,文学の広い教養が認められポンバル侯によってコインブラ大学の幾何学教授に任命された。しかし,教会を批判した詩『理性の声』A Voz da Razãoのために,1778年宗教裁判にかけられた。クーニャはこの世紀における最も大胆な詩人で,その詩のなかには反抗の叫び,自由への強い願望がみられる。作品集は 1839年に刊行された。
