Born January 20, 1866 in Santa Rita do Rio Negro, Rio de Janeiro. [Died] August 15, 1909, Rio de Janeiro. Brazilian novelist and journalist. Orphaned at the age of three, he was raised by his aunt. He entered the engineering department of a university, but soon transferred to the military academy. However, he was expelled in 1888 as a rebel, and later returned to study engineering. With the Republican Revolution, he rejoined the army, and was discharged in 1896. He then worked as a civil engineer and journalist. He went to Canudos in the northeast as a correspondent for the São Paulo newspaper, Estado de São Paulo. Based on his reportage, he wrote his masterpiece Os Sertões (1902), which can be seen as a poem about humans fighting the earth, and became a monumental work in Brazilian literature. He was shot dead in a fight. Cunha |
