Nishihara [town] - Nishihara

Japanese: 西原[町] - にしはら

A town in Nakagami County, Okinawa Prefecture, occupying the southeastern part of Okinawa Island. Facing the central-southern part of Nakagusuku Bay, it is a famous sugar cane producing area with many sugar factories. The Okinawa Expressway passes through the town. Oil refineries and other facilities are located on reclaimed land on the bay, making it a thriving industrial area. It had the highest industrial shipment value in the prefecture (2003), and is home to the University of the Ryukyus. Area: 15.90 ^km2 . Population: 34,766 (2010).
