Year of death: 11th January 1596 (9th February 1596) Year of birth: Eisho 17 (1520) A calligrapher from the Azuchi-Momoyama period. He went by the name Kusunoki Chokan. He was the son of Kusunoki Shigetaka and a descendant of Kusunoki Masamori, the grandson of Kusunoki Masanori. In 1536 (Tenbun 5), he served the Shogun Ashikaga Yoshiharu and took the name Masatora. Emperor Ogimachi pardoned the Kusunoki clan as enemies of the court, and he was appointed Junior Fourth Rank Upper and Kawachi no Kami (Kusunoki Family Tree). He later became a close aide to Oda Nobunaga. He became a right-hand man, and after the Honnoji Incident, he became a right-hand man for Hashiba (Toyotomi) Hideyoshi. He inherited the Sesonji school of calligraphy, learned the style of Iio Tsunefusa, and is considered a model for the times. In 1588 (Tensho 16), when Emperor Goyozei visited Jurakudai, he presented a clean copy of Jurakudai Gyokouki (Record of a Visit to Jurakudai) written by Hideyoshi's courtier Omura Yuki to the Emperor. Masatora wrote the Kyushu Jindo no Ki, a record of Hideyoshi's attack on Satsuma. In his later years, he became a monk and lived in Rokujo Daiwabo in Kyoto.
