A hilly mountainous region in northeastern India, 500-1000m above sea level, straddling the borders of Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, and West Bengal. The area is not known by everyone, but it is often used to refer to the mountainous region around the headwaters of the Damodar River, the North and South Koels, and other rivers. The geology is mainly composed of Precambrian granite gneiss, which is being dissected by these rivers. It was once covered with forests and was the home of Austroasiatic tribes such as the Munda, Santal, and Ho. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
