Chota Nagpur (English spelling)

Japanese: チョタ･ナーグプル（英語表記）Chota Nāgpur

A hilly mountainous region in northeastern India, 500-1000m above sea level, straddling the borders of Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, and West Bengal. The area is not known by everyone, but it is often used to refer to the mountainous region around the headwaters of the Damodar River, the North and South Koels, and other rivers. The geology is mainly composed of Precambrian granite gneiss, which is being dissected by these rivers. It was once covered with forests and was the home of Austroasiatic tribes such as the Munda, Santal, and Ho.

インド北東部，ビハール，マディヤ･プラデーシュ，オリッサ，西ベンガルの州境部にまたがる標高500～1000mの丘陵性山地帯。その範囲は人により一定しないが，ダモーダル川，南･北両コエル川などの源流部一帯の山地を指していうことが多い。地質は先カンブリア時代の花コウ片麻岩を主体とするが，これら諸河川による開析が進んでいる。かつては森林に覆われ，ムンダ，サンタル，ホーなどのアウストロアジア語系諸族に属する諸部族の居住地であった。
