Durrës

Japanese: ドゥラス(英語表記)Durrës
Durrës
Durazzo in Italian. Administrative center of the Durres region in western Albania. Located about 30 km west of the capital Tirana, it is the largest port city in Albania, facing the Adriatic Sea. Founded as a Greek colony in the 7th century BC, it was the starting point of the military route through Elbasan and Lake Ohrid to Thessaloniki during the Roman Empire, and became the most important port of the Western Roman Empire. It was under the rule of the Byzantines, Venetians, and Serbian Empires from 1501 to 1913, and was under the control of the Ottoman Empire. In 1913, it temporarily gained independence and was declared the capital of Albania. During World War II, the port facilities were destroyed by the German army, but were rebuilt after the war. There are flour mills, salt mills, tobacco, and textile factories, as well as a shipyard. It is connected to Tirana and Elbasan by a railway built after World War II. There are Roman ruins and beaches on the outskirts, and it is a popular tourist destination in the summer. Population: 85,400 (1990 estimate).
