Italian novelist. He participated in the War of Independence under Garibaldi, but was disappointed with the Treaty of Villafranca. He analyzed the relationship between the bourgeoisie and the peasants, and blamed the peasants' indifference to independence on the intellectuals' abandonment of education. He expounded on this in his Frammento sulla rivoluzione nazionale (1860). He also joined the Red Shirts and went to Sicily, but was shipwrecked on the way back and sunk in the Tyrrhenian Sea. His main work, Confessioni di un italiano (67), originally titled Confessioni di un ottuagenario (57-58), is an autobiographical historical novel set in a rural area of Friuli, in which the protagonist tells the story of his life, depicting the turbulent period of Italy's national unification. He also wrote a theory on poetry and a play.
