Born: December 10, 1845, Brunswick, Calverde Died March 1, 1929. Berlin. German art historian. A pioneer in the study of 17th century Netherlandish art, he also made outstanding contributions to research on Italian sculpture and ceramics, and Persian carpets. In 1872 he became assistant at the State Gallery in Berlin, and from 1906 to 1920 he served as general director of all the royal art museums in Prussia. His outstanding discerning eye led to the collection of Dutch and Flemish art, especially works by Rembrandt, and the Berlin Museum of Fine Arts became world-famous.
