A volcanic island located in southern Italy between Sicily and Tunisia (Africa). Area 83 km2, population 7,917 (1981). Part of the province of Trapani. As a strategic base controlling the Strait of Sicily, it has been the target of many nations' struggles since ancient times. It has been ruled by Carthage, Rome, Arabs, and Normans. During World War II, it was Mussolini's strategic base. In 1943, Allied forces landed on it and used it as a foothold for the invasion of Sicily. The language is a Sicilian dialect, but there are many traces of Latin. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
