A woodwind instrument of the oboe family. It was made in the Baroque period and was used by JS Bach and others. It has a bulge at the bottom of the tube and a lower mezzo-soprano range than a normal oboe. It is said to have been created around 1720, and was given the name "oboe d'amore" (oboe of love) because its tone is softer and sweeter than other oboes. It fell out of use for a time, but was revived in the late 19th century and has occasionally been used in 20th century orchestral and chamber music. → Oboe Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
