An American research institute engaged in research, education, and publications in economics, political science, foreign policy, and other general social sciences. Its primary objectives are to conduct basic research to inform policymaking and to promote public understanding of issues of national importance. It was established in Washington, DC on December 8, 1927, by merging three existing research institutes (the first of which had been established in 1916). The institute's name commemorates its founder, Robert Brookings (1850-1932), a St. Louis merchant and philanthropist. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
