Hotei

Japanese:
Hotei

One of the Seven Lucky Gods. A Zen monk from Fenghua County, Mingzhou (now Zhejiang Province) in China. He had a large, bloated body with a large belly. He always carried a large bag and walked around the city on a walking stick, asking for charity, putting food and other gifts in the bag. This strange monk became known in Japan during the Muromachi period, and his appearance of good fortune and the fact that he was often surrounded by children became a topic of conversation, leading to his being depicted in paintings and poems. The Morisada Manko (1853 preface) states that there are quite a few homes where a clay doll of Hotei is kept on a shelf above the kitchen stove. It is unclear why Hotei was added as one of the Seven Lucky Gods. He is said to have died in the second year of the Zhenming era (916) during the Later Liang Dynasty in China, and is also said to be the incarnation (incarnation) of Maitreya Bodhisattva.
