Robert Jemison Van de Graaff

American physicist. He studied engineering at the University of Alabama and physics at the Sorbonne and Oxford. In 1929, while a fellow at Princeton University, he built the first electrostatic belt generator, which he later developed as an accelerator for producing high-speed charged particles for nuclear physics experiments at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he moved in 1931. In 1934, he became an associate professor of physics at MIT, a position he held until 1960. During World War II, he was head of the High-Voltage Radiography Team at MIT under the auspices of the Office of Scientific Research and Development (OSRD).

アメリカの物理学者。アラバマ大学で工学を学び，ソルボンヌ大学とオックスフォード大学で物理学を学んだ。1929年，特別研究員としてプリンストン大学にいたとき，最初の帯電ベルト式静電起電機を製作，この装置はその後原子核物理学実験用の高速荷電粒子生成を目的とする加速器として，31年に移ったマサチューセッツ工科大学(MIT)を舞台に開発された。34年からは，MITの物理学の准教授となり，60年まで務めた。また第2次世界大戦中は，科学研究開発局(OSRD)の援助の下にMITの高電圧放射線写真班の責任者となる。
