1901‐67 American physicist. He studied engineering at the University of Alabama and physics at the Sorbonne and Oxford. In 1929, while a fellow at Princeton University, he built the first electrostatic belt generator, which he later developed as an accelerator for producing high-speed charged particles for nuclear physics experiments at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he moved in 1931. In 1934, he became an associate professor of physics at MIT, a position he held until 1960. During World War II, he was head of the High-Voltage Radiography Team at MIT under the auspices of the Office of Scientific Research and Development (OSRD).
