Massignon

French scholar of religion and Islam. He studied at the University of Paris and is a professor at the Collège de France. He is a leading scholar of Islamic mysticism, and his major works include "The Suffering of Hallaj" and "An Essay on the Origin of the Terminology of Islamic Mysticism." He is also known for his work as a priest in the Eastern Catholic Church, head of the Amnesty Committee for Political Prisoners during the Algerian War, and a member of the Eranos Conference. His academic tradition was succeeded by H. Corbin.
