Located between the towering Sobaek Mountains to the west and the Nakdong River flowing south to the east, the area has a well-developed basin plain at the foot of the mountains. Although gold and graphite are produced in small quantities, rice cultivation was the main agricultural industry. It is home to a major station on the North Gyeongsang Line, and as a transportation hub, commerce has flourished and urbanization is progressing. During the Three Kingdoms period, a castle was built as a military base for Silla to compete with Baekje and Goguryeo, and it has continued to be important as the administrative center of the Gyeongsang Province region.
