A field of history that investigates the history of technological development. It is inseparable from the history of the development of human life and the history of science. In ancient Egypt, civil engineering techniques such as farming, pyramid construction, and flood control works on the Nile River developed, while in the Middle Ages, technology using power sources such as windmills and waterwheels developed. Full-scale use of technology began with the Industrial Revolution, and after the invention of the steam engine by J. Watt, the level of technology rose in all fields. After World War II, electronics, polymer chemistry, atomic energy, automatic control, and other fields developed rapidly, which is called the Second Industrial Revolution. In Japan, technology was introduced from the Asian continent before the Meiji Restoration, and from Europe and America afterwards, and the country made an effort to assimilate and apply it.

技術発達の歴史を究明する歴史学の一分野。人間生活の発達の歴史や科学史とは切り離せないものである。古代エジプトでは農耕技術やピラミッド築造，ナイル川の治水工事などに代表される土木技術が発達し，中世では，風車，水車などの動力を利用する技術が発達した。本格的な技術利用は産業革命からで，J.ワットの蒸気機関の発明を境として，あらゆる分野で技術水準が高まった。第2次世界大戦以後は電子工学，高分子化学，原子力，自動制御などが急展開し，第2次産業革命と呼ばれる。日本では，明治維新以前はアジア大陸から，以後はヨーロッパ，アメリカから技術が導入され，その消化，応用に努めた。
