Oriental greenfinch (Oriental greenfinch)
A bird of the family Fringillidae (illustration) in the order Passeriformes. It is about 14cm long, the same size as a sparrow. Its dark green body has a prominent pink beak. It has a large yellow spot on its wing, which is highly visible when in flight. Females are generally brownish in color. It is found from Kamchatka to southern China. In Japan, it breeds north of Kyushu, and is a resident bird in central and southern Honshu, but those in northern Honshu and Hokkaido migrate south for winter. Many also migrate from the continent as winter birds. It is often found in mountain foothills, low mountain zones, lowland pine forests and secondary evergreen forests, garden trees around houses, and hedges.
