A mammal of the Cervidae family in the even-toed order. It is the smallest species in the Cervidae family. Its limbs and neck are short for deer, and its relatively thick body, as is typical of small deer, is arched over the back. It has short, unbranched antlers less than 5 cm long. Its body color ranges from gray to reddish brown or dark brown. It is slightly larger than the mouse deer, with a body length of 78-93 cm, shoulder height of 32-42 cm, tail length of 2-3 cm, and weight of 7-10 kg. It is found in Chile, the Andes in southern Argentina, and Chiloe Island. It lives alone, in pairs, or in small family groups in forests or thickets, and feeds on plants.
