Born in the Samaritan village of Cathay, Simon was active in Samaria in the 1st century and in Rome under the reign of Emperor Claudius. Dates of birth and death unknown. According to Acts 8:10, Simon claimed to embody the "Magic" (supreme divinity) in himself. Further details of his teachings are unknown, but they later developed into Simonite Gnosticism, and the orthodox church blamed him for founding an entire heresy. Magus means "magician," and originates from an attempt by early Christians to denigrate Simon's teachings and reduce their influence. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
