Peter Waage

Norwegian chemist. Also known as Waage. He initially studied medicine, but later moved on to chemistry and mineralogy, and in 1858, while still a student, he was awarded the Crown Prince's Gold Medal for his thesis on oxygen radicals. In 1860, he received a scholarship to study in France and Germany, where he worked under Bunsen. After returning to Norway, he became a professor of chemistry at the Royal Frederik University in Christiania (now Oslo). Together with his brother-in-law Grubel, he researched chemical equilibrium and perfected the law of mass action. He later devoted his attention to many social issues, including the preservation of milk and the development and use of fish. In 1868, he served as chairman of the Society of Arts and Crafts, laying the foundations for today's Norwegian Chemical Society. He was active as a member of the Academy of Sciences, the Patent Committee, and the supervisory committee for the National Prototype of Weights and Measures, and contributed to the development of modern chemistry in Norway.

ノルウェーの化学者。ワーゲともいう。最初は医学を学んだが、のちに化学、鉱物学に進み、学生時代の1858年酸素ラジカルに関する論文で皇太子金賞牌(はい)を授与される。1860年奨学金を受けてフランス、ドイツに留学し、ブンゼンの下で研究。帰国後、クリスティアニア（現在のオスロ）の王立フレデリク大学化学教授。義兄のグルベルと共同で化学平衡について研究し、質量作用の法則を完成させた。その後、牛乳保存や魚類の開発利用など多くの社会的問題に関心を注いだ。1868年工芸協会の委員長を務め、今日のノルウェー化学会の基礎を築く。科学アカデミー委員、特許委員会委員、度量衡国有原器の監督委員などとして活躍し、ノルウェー近代化学の発展に寄与した。
