A Spanish word meaning "enlightened Indian." It mainly refers to people in Peru who are of mixed race between whites and indigenous Indians. It is roughly synonymous with mestizo. In rural areas, they generally work as carpenters, peddlers, or candy stores, and are economically better off than ordinary Indians. They speak some Spanish, and belong to the educated class in rural areas. They are sometimes considered to be a transitional group from Indians to mestizos, which is important in the study of South American society. Choro |
