Pond spirit - Ikenosei

Japanese: 池の精 - いけのせい
Pond spirit - Ikenosei
This is the title of Grimm's Fairy Tales No. 181, but similar folk tales are found in Northern Europe, Central Europe, Greece, and elsewhere. A water spirit appears before a poor watermill owner and offers to make him happy if he gives him a newborn baby. The man thinks she will give him a dog or cat, so he promises, but when he returns home he finds that he has given birth to a son. The man's family becomes wealthy, and his son becomes a hunter and gets married. However, the son is pulled underwater by the water spirit. The wife goes to a hut on the grass and receives a golden comb, flute, and spinning wheel from an old woman, which she uses to rescue her husband.
