Yoshio Okada

Cytologist. Born in Hiroshima Prefecture. Graduated from Osaka University School of Medicine in 1952 (Showa 27). Became professor at the Cell Engineering Center of the Institute of Microbiology at the same university in 1972, and received the Asahi Prize in the same year for his "analysis of cell fusion phenomena." In 1979, he received the Fujiwara Prize for his "discovery and research into cell fusion phenomena by HVJ," and in 1980, he received the Japan Academy Imperial Prize for his "analysis of cell fusion phenomena and cell engineering applications." His research, from the discovery of cell fusion phenomena to elucidating the conditions for cell fusion outside of the body, has led to advances in bioscience and biotechnology. He was awarded the Person of Cultural Merit in 1982 and the Order of Culture in 1987. He served as chairman of the Senri Life Sciences Foundation from 1990 (Heisei 2) to 2007.
