The Order to Expel the Missionaries - Bateren Tsuiho Rei

The Order to Expel the Missionaries - Bateren Tsuiho Rei
A law that stipulated the expulsion of Christian missionaries from the country. The five articles issued by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in Kyushu on June 19, 1587 (Tensho 15) stated that it was inappropriate for Christianity to be preached in Japan, a divine and Buddhist country, and that the missionaries were destroying Buddhism by forcing people to convert, and that they should leave the country within 20 days. However, the arrival of Portuguese ships was for business purposes, and merchants were not banned from traveling, suggesting an intention to maintain trade. The expulsion order, drawn up by Ishin Suden at the order of Tokugawa Ieyasu in 1613, was promulgated in the name of Shogun Tokugawa Hidetada, and became the basis of the shogunate's ban on Christianity throughout the Edo period. It is generally called the Bottenren expulsion document to distinguish it from the one from Toyotomi Hideyoshi's time.
