Japanese: ハロゲン化水素 - ハロゲンかすいそ(英語表記)hydrogen halide
Hydrogen halide - halogen kasuiso (English spelling)
A compound of a halogen element and hydrogen. There are four types: hydrogen fluoride (HF), hydrogen chloride (HCl), hydrogen bromide (HBr), and hydrogen iodide (HI). All are produced by the direct reaction of a halogen with hydrogen. At room temperature, all are colorless, fuming gases, with boiling points of hydrogen fluoride at 19.5°C, hydrogen chloride at -85°C, hydrogen bromide at -68.7°C, and hydrogen iodide at -35.7°C. All are highly soluble in water, producing hydrofluoric acid, hydrochloric acid, hydrobromic acid, and hydroiodic acid, respectively.
