Daikon Island

Japanese: 大根島 - だいこんじま
Daikon Island

An island floating in Lake Nakaumi in the northeastern part of Shimane Prefecture. It forms the center of Yatsuka Town, Matsue City. Its area is 4.89 square kilometers. In 1981, a dike road was built between the island and Omizaki in Matsue City, and a bus service began operating there. It is an aspidis-type volcanic island made of hard, porous basalt, with the highest point being Mt. Otsuka (42 meters), and the island as a whole is a gently sloping plateau. The approximately 200-meter lava cave in the eastern part of the island is called Yuuki-do, and is designated as a special natural monument as a "lava tunnel." There is also a second lava cave called Ryukei-do, which is also designated as a national natural monument. It is known for cultivating medicinal ginseng and the prefectural flower, peonies.
