Japanese: 卸売市場 - おろしうりしじょう（英語表記）wholesale market

It is a system for efficiently distributing items with many producers and many consumers, such as fresh produce, flowers, and fish, and its basic role is to determine prices through collection, distribution, and auction. Transactions that go through wholesale markets are called market distribution, while transactions that do not go through wholesalers, such as direct from the farm or morning markets, are called off-market distribution. In June 2004, the Wholesale Market Law was revised to address issues such as complex distribution structures, inter-market transfers, and relative pre-emption. The main revisions include the liberalization of commission fees paid by production areas to wholesale markets, and the relaxation of business regulations such as the prohibition on direct sales to major mass retailers and the restaurant industry (prohibition on third-party sales).

青果物、生花、魚など、多数の生産者と多数の消費者が存在する品目を効率的に流通させる仕組みで、集荷・分荷・競りによる価格形成が基本的な役割。卸売市場を経由する取引は市場流通、産直や朝市など卸を経由しない取引は市場外流通と呼ばれる。2004年6月に、複雑な流通機構、市場間転送、相対先取りなどの問題に対応するため、卸売市場法が改正された。主な改正内容は、産地が卸売市場に支払う委託手数料の自由化と、大手量販店や外食産業への直接販売ができない(第三者販売の禁止)といった事業規制の緩和など。
