A deciduous shrub of the Rosaceae family. Native to China, it is cultivated in gardens for decorative purposes. The trunk is well-branched, dark brown, and has thorn-like twigs. The leaves are 4-8 cm long, egg-shaped, alternate, and have egg-shaped stipules at the base. In spring, several clusters of deep red five-petal flowers bloom. Depending on the cultivar, there are white flowers, pale pink flowers, and striped flowers. The fruit resembles a quince, but is small, fragrant, and ripens to a yellow color, but is hard, astringent, and sour, making it inedible. The same genus, Kusaboke (Japanese quince), grows wild in mountainous areas throughout Japan.
