Jan Steen

Jan Steen

Dutch painter. Born and died in Leiden. Though considered a pupil of Gooyen, he is also thought to have been influenced by Ostade and Hals. Registered with the Leiden painters' guild in 1648, he continued to work in The Hague, Delft and Haarlem, skillfully assimilating the techniques of various schools, and settled in Leiden around 1670. A genre painter who studied the lives and customs of ordinary people, he excelled in depicting groups, and meticulously depicted human psychology within groups. He was an extremely prolific artist, with around 800 extant works, including "The Feast of St. Nicholas" (Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam), his most famous work.
