Ancient Greek women's clothing. Commonly known as the Doric chiton. A rectangular piece of wool or linen cloth was folded lengthwise, with the folded part facing outward, covering the body, and pinned at the shoulders and either sewn or pinned at the sides. Every four years, the daughters of noble families in Athens, under the guidance of a priestess, wove a peplos to be dedicated to the statue of Athena Polias, the city's patron goddess. In Sparta, the peplos was worn without a sash, with one side open and the legs showing, but generally it was worn with a sash around the waist or under the chest. If the folded part was long, a sash was worn over it. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
