Hebron - Heburon (English spelling) Hebron

Hebron - Heburon (English spelling) Hebron

An old town on the West Bank of the Jordan River in Western Asia. It is located 32 km south of Jerusalem. It was part of Jordanian territory, but was occupied by Israel since 1967. In 1997, under the agreement between the Israeli government and the Palestinian Authority (Hebron Accord), Israeli troops withdrew from 80% of the area, and the Palestinian Authority's autonomy was partially recognized. The population was 79,087 in 1987, and 210,081 thereafter (estimated for 2019). The Book of Genesis in the Old Testament states that Abraham purchased the land here as a burial site for his wife Sarah. The Cave of Machpelah, where his family's grave is located, is a holy site for both Judaism and Islam, with a mosque built above it. It is the birthplace of Hebron glass, and there are orchards of figs, grapes, and other fruits in the surrounding area.
