Bellow, Saul
Born July 10, 1915 in Lachine, near Montreal, Canada.
[Died] April 5, 2005. Brookline, Massachusetts. American novelist. Graduated from the University of Chicago and Northwestern University. While teaching at various universities, he wrote novels, and with his debut novels, Dangling Man (1944) and The Victim (1947), he impressed upon readers that he was an introspective writer who went beyond the framework of a Jewish writer and approached the essence of modern people in general. He then published The Adventures of Augie March (1953, National Book Award), a picaresque novel that depicts the protagonist's exploits with a free-flowing pen, and this style was continued in Henderson the Rain King (1959). His other works include Herzog (1964, National Book Award), Mr. Sammler's Planet (1970, National Book Award), Humboldt's Gift (1975, Pulitzer Prize), a collection of short stories Mosby's Memoirs and Other Stories (1968), and the play The Last Analysis (1965). He visited Japan in 1972. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1976.

Born: January 19, 1858, Königsberg
German historian. Professor at the universities of Marburg (1897), Tübingen (1901), and Freiburg (1905). He was strongly opposed to the Historical School of Economic History and materialistic interpretation of history, but based on an idealistic view of history rooted in romanticism, he made outstanding achievements in the history of the constitutional system and socio-economic history of medieval Germany with a very sharp and critical approach. His major works include The Territorial Parliament of Jülich-Berg (Die landständische Verfassung von Jülich-Berg) (2 volumes, 1885-86), Territorium und Stadt (Territorium and City) (1900), The Medieval German State (Der deutsche Staat der Mittelalters) (Vol. 1 only, 14, 25), and Problems of Economic History (Probleme der Wirtschaftsgeschichte) (20).
