A leaf-like brown alga of the Fucalaceae family (illustration) that is widely distributed along the coasts of cold seas such as Hokkaido and the Tohoku region, and that grows in colonies on rocks near the high tide line. The body is flattened and repeatedly forked into a fan shape. It is 15-20 cm tall and 1-2 cm wide, with a clear midrib except at the tip. In summer, it produces oophores and antheridium at the tip of the body, where meiosis occurs to produce haploid eggs and sperm. The zygote that is produced as a result of fertilization germinates and grows into the usual algal body. In other words, the algal body is diplomorphic, with no haploid generation.
