Holland - Holland (English spelling)

It is the name of a region and a province in the western part of the Netherlands. This region took the lead at the time of independence from Spain, and has been the center of politics, economy, and culture ever since, so it is often used as the name for the whole of the Netherlands. The Japanese word "Holland" also originates from this regional name. It has been the territory of the Counts of Holland since the 11th century. In 1323, it merged with Zeeland, and in 1433 it became part of the Duke of Burgundy. In 1477, it became part of the Habsburgs' territory, and in 1555 it came under Spanish control. In 1579, it joined the Union of Utrecht and promoted the Dutch independence movement. After the Congress of Vienna in 1815, it became a province of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, and in 1840 it was divided into two provinces: Noord (north) Holland (centered in Haarlem) and Seyd (south) Holland (centered in The Hague).

オランダ西部の地方名で、州名でもある。この地域はスペインからの独立時に主導権を握り、それ以後も政治、経済、文化の中心となったため、しばしばオランダ全土の名称としても使用される。日本語の「オランダ」もこの地方名が語源である。11世紀以来ホラント伯の所領であった。1323年ゼーラントを合併、1433年ブルゴーニュ公に帰属し、77年ハプスブルク家所領となり、1555年スペインの支配下に入る。1579年ユトレヒト同盟に加わりオランダ独立運動を推進した。1815年ウィーン会議後ネーデルラント王国の一州となり、40年ノールト（北）・ホラント（中心はハールレム）とゾイト（南）・ホラント（中心はハーグ）の二州に分割された。
