Born July 30, 1857 in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. [Died] August 3, 1929. American economist and sociologist near Menlo Park, California. Born to a farming family of Norwegian immigrants, he studied at Yale and Cornell universities. After teaching at the universities of Chicago, Stanford, and Missouri, he edited the magazine The Dial in 1918. He studied the evolution of economic institutions rather than economic theory, and became the founder of institutional economics. In his main work, The Theory of the Leisure Class: An Economic Study in the Evolution of Institutions (1899), he argued that the creative and aggressive instincts that underlie human behavior are the essence of leisure, while the former produces labor, and that the leisure class emerged from the establishment of ownership, and that the desire for possessions leads to the acquisition of wealth and power. He also provided a unique explanation of leisure, which had a great influence on many later works. His other works include The Theory of Business Enterprise (1904), The Vested Interests and the State of the Industrial Arts (19), and Absentee Ownership and Business Enterprise in Recent Times: The Case of America (23).
