A tribe of Native Americans living in the Queen Charlotte Sound region on the Pacific coast of North America. They make their living by hunting and fishing for marine mammals and salmon. Their language belongs to the Huacach family and is divided into three dialects. They have totem beliefs. Their basic social unit is a local group based on bilateral descent, and they are divided into classes of nobles, commoners, and slaves, but they lack unilineal kinship groups such as clans. Marriages are generally exogamy, and are practiced in both patrilineal and matrilineal ways. They are famous for practicing potlatches.
