It refers to the "bullying" inflicted on a groom, and can be directed at all new husbands (oto), or at adopted grooms. The former is practiced in various regions on New Year's Day, festivals, and other occasions, where the groom is forced to eat large portions of rice, or has water or mud thrown over him. The latter is a test to make him obey village regulations, such as making him carry a heavy drum during festivals or making him do menial work even if he is older. In a hierarchical society, there is a hierarchy for each individual, and among those of equal status, age hierarchy has been maintained, but adopted grooms and brides, as people who have entered from elsewhere, were previously placed lower in the hierarchy. However, the content of the "bullying" is vague, and can include variations on rebirth spells (jujutsu) to move on to the next stage in a rite of passage, or "jealousy" at the happiness of others.
