...Pudovkin and Eisenstein, along with director and film theorist LV Kuleshov (1899-1970), analyzed the techniques and methods of American films, including those of D.W. Griffith and Chaplin, and theorized them in the form of dialectical materialism, proposing the theory of montage. Eisenstein's Battleship Potemkin (1925) and Pudovkin's The Mother (1926), which are monumental in the history of silent films, were produced, followed by Eisenstein's October (1928), a film commemorating the 10th anniversary of the revolution, and Pudovkin's The Asian Storm (1928). Furthermore, Eisenstein's The Line (Old and New) (1929), which enlightened and propagandized socialist construction, and Ukrainian director A.P.Dovzhenko's (1894-1956) film The Earth (1930), which depicts agricultural collectivization, were produced. In 1928, even though not a single talkie had yet been made in the Soviet Union, three directors, Eisenstein, Pudovkin, and GV Aleksandrov (1903-1983), jointly published the "Manifesto on Talkies," in which they proclaimed that the montage of images and sound and their contrapuntal treatment were the new path for talkie art.

…監督であり映画理論家でもあるクレショフL.V.Kuleshov(1899‐1970)とともにプドフキンとエイゼンシテインは，D.W.グリフィスやチャップリンをはじめ，アメリカ映画の技術や手法を分析した結果を〈唯物弁証法〉的に理論化してモンタージュ理論を提唱した。サイレント映画史を飾るエイゼンシテイン監督《戦艦ポチョムキン》(1925)，プドフキン監督《母》(1926)がつくられ，エイゼンシテインの革命10周年記念映画《十月》(1928)，プドフキンの《アジアの嵐》(1928)が続き，さらに社会主義的建設を啓蒙宣伝するエイゼンシテイン監督《全線(古きものと新しきもの)》(1929)，ウクライナのドブジェンコA.P.Dovzhenko(1894‐1956)監督の農業集団化を描いた《大地》(1930)などの作品がつくられた。　28年，ソビエトではまだ1本のトーキーもつくられていなかったが，エイゼンシテイン，プドフキン，アレクサンドロフG.V.Aleksandrov(1903‐83)の3人の監督が連名で〈トーキーに関する宣言〉を発表して，映像と音のモンタージュ，その対位法的処理が新しいトーキー芸術の道であると唱えた。…
