This long road tunnel is located on the international highway connecting the city of Lyon in central France and the city of Turin in northwest Italy, and passes through the Alps on the border. Construction began in 1974 and was completed in 1980. It is the third longest road tunnel in the world (as of 1997), with a length of 12,901 m, and passes from Modane on the French side to Bardonecchia on the Italian side. Before the tunnel was completed, the road crossed the mountain pass at Mont Cenis (2,100 m above sea level), and was impassable in winter due to snow. With the completion of the tunnel, high-speed automobile traffic was now available year-round between the Rhône River basin in France, one of the economic centers of both countries, and the Po River basin in Italy.
