Eperjes in Hungarian. A city in eastern Slovakia. Located on the Torsa River, about 35 km north of Košice. A town dating back to the mid-13th century, it became a free city in 1374 and flourished as a key commercial transportation point connecting the Baltic Sea and the Balkan Peninsula. In addition to the remains of a medieval marketplace, there are many historical buildings, including Gothic, Baroque, and Rococo cathedrals, and Renaissance-style civic houses. It is a hub for railroads and roads, and grew rapidly with the development of Slovak industry after World War II. Industries such as electrical equipment, textiles, and food are thriving. Population: 87,788 (1991 estimate).

ハンガリー語ではエペリェシュ Eperjes。スロバキア東部の都市。コシツェの北約 35kmのトルサ川沿いに位置する。 13世紀中頃からの町で，1374年には自由都市となり，バルト海とバルカン半島とを結ぶ商業交通の要地として栄えた。中世の市場が残るほか，ゴシック，バロック，ロココの各様式の聖堂群，ルネサンス様式の市民の家など，歴史的建築物が多い。鉄道および道路の結節点をなし，第2次世界大戦後のスロバキア工業の開発により急速な発展をとげた。電機，繊維，食品などの工業が盛ん。人口8万 7788 (1991推計) 。
