Eperjes in Hungarian. A city in eastern Slovakia. Located on the Torsa River, about 35 km north of Košice. A town dating back to the mid-13th century, it became a free city in 1374 and flourished as a key commercial transportation point connecting the Baltic Sea and the Balkan Peninsula. In addition to the remains of a medieval marketplace, there are many historical buildings, including Gothic, Baroque, and Rococo cathedrals, and Renaissance-style civic houses. It is a hub for railroads and roads, and grew rapidly with the development of Slovak industry after World War II. Industries such as electrical equipment, textiles, and food are thriving. ハンガリー語ではエペリェシュ Eperjes。スロバキア東部の都市。コシツェの北約 35kmのトルサ川沿いに位置する。 13世紀中頃からの町で,1374年には自由都市となり,バルト海とバルカン半島とを結ぶ商業交通の要地として栄えた。中世の市場が残るほか,ゴシック,バロック,ロココの各様式の聖堂群,ルネサンス様式の市民の家など,歴史的建築物が多い。鉄道および道路の結節点をなし,第2次世界大戦後のスロバキア工業の開発により急速な発展をとげた。電機,繊維,食品などの工業が盛ん。人口8万 7788 (1991推計) 。
