A book of court ceremonies from the early Heian period. The author is unknown. The Catalogue of Legal Documents of Japan lists the compilations of the Kōnin Ceremonies, the Jōgan Ceremonies, and the Engi Ceremonies, each in 10 volumes, and these are called the Sandai Ceremonies. However, there are many inconsistencies in the compilations of the Kōnin and Engi ceremonies, and there are no surviving copies of either book (though the latter has a few lost passages). In contrast, there is a 10-volume edition of the Jōgan Ceremonies simply titled Ceremonies, which the 18th-century scholar of Japanese classics, Kada Arimitsu, named Jōgan Ceremonies. However, there is no record of the compilation in the Sandai Jitsuroku, and the current edition does not have a preface, and the names of government offices from the Jōgan period onwards are mixed in.
