A city in the Var department in southeastern France. Population 46,801 (1999). A resort city located 3km northwest of Saint-Raphaël on the Côte d'Azur. Produces cork, plastics and textiles. It originated as a Roman naval port built by Caesar in 49 BC, but as the coastline receded, a canal was built between the coast and the port, and its functions as a port city declined. The city's name comes from Forum Julii, "City of Julius (Caesar)." It is the seat of a bishopric, and has Roman ruins such as an 11th-12th century cathedral and an amphitheater. It is the birthplace of the philosopher Sieyès. [Nobuyoshi Aoki] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
