Fréjus - Fréjus (English spelling)

A city in the Var department in southeastern France. Population 46,801 (1999). A resort city located 3km northwest of Saint-Raphaël on the Côte d'Azur. Produces cork, plastics and textiles. It originated as a Roman naval port built by Caesar in 49 BC, but as the coastline receded, a canal was built between the coast and the port, and its functions as a port city declined. The city's name comes from Forum Julii, "City of Julius (Caesar)." It is the seat of a bishopric, and has Roman ruins such as an 11th-12th century cathedral and an amphitheater. It is the birthplace of the philosopher Sieyès.

フランス南東部、バール県の都市。人口4万6801（1999）。コート・ダジュールのサン・ラファエル北西3キロメートルにある保養都市。コルク、プラスチック、繊維の生産がある。紀元前49年カエサル建設のローマ軍港を起源とするが、海岸線の後退で海岸と港の間は運河となり、港湾都市の機能は衰退した。市名は、「ユリウス（カエサル）の市」Forum Juliiに由来する。司教座の所在地で、11～12世紀の大聖堂や、円形劇場などのローマ遺跡がある。思想家シエイエスの生地である。
