A fish of the mullet family. Its name often changes as it grows. Examples include inakko, ina, borah, and todo (Tokyo). It can reach a total length of 90 cm. Its stomach is shaped like an abacus bead, and is commonly called the navel of a mullet. It is found in warm seas around the world. The young fish grow in brackish or freshwater areas, and in autumn they descend to the sea. They eat organic matter, diatoms, and blue-green algae on the seabed along with mud, and often jump to the surface. In Nagasaki Prefecture, Okinawa, Taiwan, and other areas, karasumi is made from the ovaries. It is a popular fish for fishing, and is a winter delicacy. →Related topicsSnatch net|Menada Mullet→ Related topics: Oroshi (wind gust) | Mountain climate MulletSource : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
