Libraries attached to parliaments. They can be traced back to the German city council libraries, and there are libraries at the national level to the state parliament level. The best known are the National Diet Library of Japan, the Library of Congress in the United States, and the National Diet Library of Korea. As they play a role in supporting parliamentary legislative activities in terms of providing information and legislative reference services, they generally hold many legal and political materials, but in recent years, parliamentary discussions have expanded to include environmental issues, science and technology, and ethnic issues, and the range of services they provide has been widened. The National Diet Library has a Research and Legislative Reference Bureau, which employs a large number of specialized staff members.
