Japanese: 神道流 - しんとうりゅう

Its official name is Tenshinshoden Shinto-ryu. It is one of the schools of swordsmanship and the oldest in the history of Japanese kendo. It is said to have been founded by Iizasa Choisai (1387?-1488) of Iizasa, Shimousa Province, through divine instruction from Katori Shrine. Shinto-ryu was a comprehensive martial art that included swordsmanship, naginata, spear, iaido, and military tactics. Choisai is revered as the founder of the revival of swordsmanship, and his disciples included Morooka Ichiu, Tsukahara Tosa-no-kami Yasumoto, and Matsumoto Bizen-no-kami Masanobu. Tsukahara Tosa-no-kami's son Tsukahara Bokuden founded the Shinto-ryu, and Ichiu's disciple Negishi Tokaku founded the Mijin-ryu.

正式名称は〈天真正伝神道流〉。剣術流派の一つで，日本剣道史上最古のもの。下総(しもうさ)国飯篠(いいざさ)の飯篠長威斎(ちょういさい)〔1387？-1488〕が香取神宮の神伝によって創始したという。神道流は剣術，なぎなた，槍(やり)，居合，軍法などをすべて含む総合武術であった。長威斎は剣術中興の祖と仰がれ，その門から諸岡一羽(もろおかいちう)，塚原土佐守安幹，松本備前守政信らの名人が出，塚原土佐守の子塚原卜伝(ぼくでん)は新当流を，一羽の門人根岸兎角は微塵(みじん)流を開いた。
