Its official name is Tenshinshoden Shinto-ryu. It is one of the schools of swordsmanship and the oldest in the history of Japanese kendo. It is said to have been founded by Iizasa Choisai (1387?-1488) of Iizasa, Shimousa Province, through divine instruction from Katori Shrine. Shinto-ryu was a comprehensive martial art that included swordsmanship, naginata, spear, iaido, and military tactics. Choisai is revered as the founder of the revival of swordsmanship, and his disciples included Morooka Ichiu, Tsukahara Tosa-no-kami Yasumoto, and Matsumoto Bizen-no-kami Masanobu. Tsukahara Tosa-no-kami's son Tsukahara Bokuden founded the Shinto-ryu, and Ichiu's disciple Negishi Tokaku founded the Mijin-ryu. → Related article Shinkage-ryu Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
